In the parking lot, Fay lit a cigarette and took long draws until a security guard came by and told him smoking was not permitted on hospital grounds. The little punk, Fay thought. The little punk in his plastic boots. He smiled at the guard and held his cigarette out in front of his eyes, watching the smoke curl up and away. When he was sure the guard was watching too, he stuck the cigarette into the side of the guard’s neck. The guard bent double and, when he did, Fay hit him once behind the ear and the yelling stopped.

He was ready for work.
